How does AtSpec compare with dedicated hardware?

AtSpec is implemented purely in software and as such, the level of throughput capable is typically less than that of dedicated hardware implementations. In pure functional terms AtSpec gives all the common features of dedicated hardware spectrum analyzers but without the expense. Alternatively, you could opt for a hybrid solution using a dedicated DSP card to perform the numerical processing. Both of these approaches are far more expensive than the approach adopted with AtSpec, and furthermore, have a limited life span since DSP hardware quickly becomes obsolete. AtSpec, being a software solution, has a longer life span and can be upgraded at far cheaper costs to the user than the alternative hardware based solutions. Even though AtSpec is a software solution it is by no means a compromised one. Try it for yourself. Download the software and see how AtSpec compares to other spectrum analysis technologies. Being a software solution running under the Windows operating system, you may find it more convenient than  hardware based spectrum analyzers because of it's transportability and ease of data integration with other software packages.
